MICHAEL'S WORLD:
A Generation of Studio Artists in Old Town Victoria
This inaugural exhibition for the Legacy Gallery & Cafe draws on the Williams collection of art and utilizes one of the many properties which the University of Victoria received through his generous bequest in 2002.
Through the 1970s to the 1990s more than 100 artists and craftspeople took up studio space in the semi-abandoned and near derelict buildings of Old Town Victoria. They constituted the cultural, social and economic core of its revival. Michael Williams was one of a very small group of entrepreneurs who redeveloped the core of Victoria in their wash. "We were the disinfectant" said Laird Campbell, one of the earliest occupants of studio space in Chinatown. Many tenanted Michael's properties; some leased store fronts for 'occasional galleries', others were just friends. This was "Michael's World". It was the world out of which Michael developed his taste of art, a multitude of friends and acquaintances, and ultimately his personal art collection.

who paints the city's scenic spots most Fridays then posts his work
up on his website for locals and visitors alike to see. Fashionable
'Plein air' painting is the peoples' art - quick, sketchy and much
like the Group of Seven, often painted on a variety of supports
